PART 2. Technical

Developing uid.me under the wing of uCoz, we found ourselves in a rather unusual position: on the one hand, the entire project code was supposed to be written from scratch, on the other hand, on the day of release the project automatically became highly loaded, since it had to import more than 20 million profiles, even with taking into account the fact that bot registrations and very ancient profiles did not pass the competition.

However, we decided to do everything beautifully and using fashionable technologies, thus conducting reconnaissance in force, gaining a lot of experience and potential leveling in the end.

The following were chosen as the components of success:

0. Nginx. Where would we be without him?

1. A database that solves out of the box the issue of distributing data across several servers + fault tolerance in case of physical loss of a server from the cluster for any reason. In this capacity, despite active holivars, MongoDB was chosen.

2. A flexible data scheme that allows you to go through the initial and subsequent phases of functional prototyping without loss. Again, MongoDB helped, although here I had to pay in resources for convenience, so to get the main answer to the question: “Is BSON a luxury, or a modern means of transportation?” - still to come.

It is worth noting that the original mysql database of user profiles grew 5 times when converted to MongoDB format. However, each profile was enriched with an impressive amount of new data related to the functionality uid.me, so it's not just the gluttony of BSON's flexible data schema.

3. To be honest, given the modern trend towards the active use of dynamic JS interfaces (as well as immense respect for the technological breakthrough made by Google engineers when developing V8 Javascript, which is an order of magnitude better in performance than all existing scripting languages ​​due to dynamic compilation into machine code), it crept in a crazy idea to use node.js and close the circle of web development in JavaScript, and at the same time get a few fat buns...

But they decided that “ one project - one new technology, and for now MongoDB is SO MUCH enough for us” (c) Alexander Solovyov. By the way, who hasn't seen this his report- this is a hit, we recommend it to the whole team!

As a result, we decided to leave the corporate-familiar Perl as the server technology, but we managed to gain a second cosmic speed, leave the gravitational field of fast_cgi and apply Mojolicious- a modern, autonomous and adequate (not counting the author) web framework with routes, helpers, bridges, built-in support for asynchronous requests and other goodies required of a modern developer.

4. Total asynchrony and data caching when interacting with social networks.

Speaking of the prototype of the project, it was noticed that the data from social networks received by the about.me service is not updated, being downloaded only once - at the time the service is connected. The option to update the cache is probably available to VIP users, but we were unable to get about.me to update the information. This led us to think that it is worthwhile to organize inter-server communication and a caching system as efficiently as possible in order to minimize the risk of similar problems occurring in the future.

Almost universally implemented OAuth2 and the similarity in the organization of the APIs of various social networks made it possible to successfully generalize the interaction.

Of course, at the prototype stage, all work with the API was synchronous, but blocking Hypnotoad workers to carry out API requests in a high-load project is a definite luxury and waste. Fortunately, Mojolicious is built on a very decent event machine, both in terms of interface and implementation, thanks to which, by the way, each worker in the pool is capable of processing in parallel not one (as is the case, say, with mod_perl), but dozens of parallel requests , of course, provided that they contain a significant amount of asynchronous code.

By the way, considering that one of the main “frightening” arguments against the use of node.js is its total asynchrony, Mojolicious can serve as an excellent mental bridge when you start development within the framework of the classical synchronous paradigm, and end up with at least a significant part hybrid code (sync + async). Frankly, now we are much less afraid of node.js and hope to use it in subsequent projects.

At all, uid.me was made according to the principle “no to bicycles”, and a whole layer of fossil homemade products was solemnly sacrificed to Shiva, headed by the kilobyte macro, widely known in narrow circles “ dw”, which since 2005 has faithfully served us and the developers close to us and allowed us to avoid the transcendent horror of DBIx::Class in difficult times. Returning to MongoDB

I have wanted to put something similar to a NoSQL solution into practice since the times when it was not mainstream. Within the framework of the high-load tasks that had to be faced at that time, the following understanding gradually emerged:

1. A classic LAMP project starts with a classic SQL database.
2. If the project becomes popular, it acquires the “highload” status, otherwise goto 1.
3. The “highload” status obliges us to think closely about caching, sharding, replication and
backup of what is stored in the SQL database.
4. The evolution of the data schema of a living project becomes more painful the more data is accumulated, and the more in demand the more popular the project turns out to be.
5. As a result of all this, the ORM code begins to perform the functions of mutex, data serialization/deserialization for memcached, primitive sharding, and in particularly severe situations - patches to ensure backward compatibility of the data schema (since it was not always possible to afford a large end-to-end data update in real conditions) .

However, enough about the sad things, the 2000s were harsh.

The beginning of the 2010s was illuminated by the emergence of several NoSQL solutions that promised to eliminate most of the problems of the growing highload project “out of the box”. The appearance of open, ready-to-use NoSQL solutions was predicted by many, but, nevertheless, the actual acquisition of a wonderful future pleasantly surprised us.

After consulting with colleagues who were more extreme in terms of innovation, we decided to try MongoDB.

Studying a new technology for ourselves, we considered it logical to use its capabilities to the maximum, hoping for the best (and therefore a silver bullet out of the box), hoping, however, to fall back to more classical techniques in those places where excessive arrogance would confront us with interesting pitfalls.

By making the most of your capabilities, we mean the following:

1. The JSON data storage format made it possible not to bother with the usual parent/child/x connections in the data schema, with or without reason, limiting ourselves to common sense. As a result, the nested structure of the main user object turned out to be bold, but convenient. They boldly included a bunch of checkboxes, display settings, small linked lists and all that other stuff that previously immediately led to the creation of a pack of near-user SQL tables.

2. General-purpose code was added to the data model, which at the interface prototyping stage made it extremely pleasant to increase JS functionality: at the URL /profile/save it became possible to send any JSON that extends the user object with new data, for example:

All operations associated with the activity of an authorized user were packaged into a common send function with a latent collector of 500 ms, combining various atomic edits into common packets.

As a result, client-side developers were able to easily expand the structure of the user object by simply starting to use new fields.

Of course, after the prototyping phase, the /profile/save backend was equipped with contextual data filters that cut out unknown fields and filtered values ​​for correctness.

There was only one problem left - the database could store users for whom some fields did not exist at all, since the last time they edited their profile even before these fields appeared. Ideally, I would like to have default values ​​for each field that will magically appear in any object retrieved from the database.

In the uCoz system, you also have a uID account at your disposal.

This account allows you to:

• create websites in the uCoz system;
• access uCoz websites (with uID support) using your uID login and without re-registration;
• use the uID.me personal page service.

Even if you have not previously registered on the site with uID authorization, an account for your email will be created automatically.
